Role overview

CarGurus is looking for a summer UX Design Intern to join our design team!

Our mission is to improve the user experience across every interaction with CarGurus. We combine a deep understanding of user needs, business goals, and key metrics with data and consumer insights to design features that make the car shopping journey more intuitive, efficient, and enjoyable.

As an UX Design Intern, you will join an 11-week Summer Internship Program designed to give you hands-on experience, expand your professional network, and build core industry skills. This full-time opportunity (40 hours per week) runs from June through August 2027. CarGurus operates on a hybrid working model, and candidates should expect to work out of our Boston, MA office 60% of the time (approximately three days per week).

What you'll do

  • Own a scoped design project end to end: problem framing, wireframes, prototypes, handoff. with mentorship from a designer on the team.
  • Use AI-assisted design tools (Figma Make, Claude Design, and similar) to go from concept to interactive prototype quickly, and to explore more directions than you could by hand.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and marketing, to support product development and delivery.
  • Present findings, ideas, and progress to stakeholders during meetings or reviews.
  • Assist in gathering and analyzing customer feedback, market trends, and data to inform product decisions.
  • Support the team in tracking product performance metrics and identifying opportunities for improvement.

What you'll bring

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Centered Design, Human Factors, Business, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, with eligibility to complete a full-time internship.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen interest in understanding user needs.
  • Craft fundamentals: layout, hierarchy, typography, and common interaction patterns.
  • A passion for solving customer problems and improving user experiences.
  • Genuine curiosity about user needs, and comfort making decisions with incomplete information.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills: you can explain why a design works, not just what it does
  • Self-motivated, with a proactive and collaborative approach to work.
  • Familiarity with Figma, AI tools (Claude, Claude Design, Claude Code)
  • Product management tools (JIRA, Trello) and methodologies (Agile, Scrum) is a plus.
  • Prior internship or project experience is preferred but not required.
  • A portfolio link (required) showing your process, not just finished screens: how you framed the problem, what you tried, what you'd change.
